	Talk City http://www.talkcity.com Several different membership levels. Lots of people chatting in a variety of different room categories.
	Yahoo! Chat http://chat.yahoo.com/ Login with you’re your Yahoo ID and choose your desired chat category. Setup your favorite rooms for quick access.
	MSN Chat http://chat.msn.com/ This is, unfortunately, now a subscription service. I’m including it because it’s still a good online chat hub.
	SpinChat http://www.spinchat.com A large online chat community. Create a profile, play games with other people, vote on photos, and more.
	mIRC http://www.mirc.com/ mIRC is a program that lets you connect to IRC servers. These servers have tons of different channels and you’re sure to find something that strikes your interest.

	Instant Messaging
	MSN Messenger http://messenger.msn.com Windows comes with this messenger built-in, but you’ll have to upgrade to get the latest and greatest features. This instant messenger is my personal favorite.
	AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) http://www.aim.com/ Use your AIM Buddy List to talk with friends, family, and co-workers. 100+ million members.
	Yahoo! Messenger http://messenger.yahoo.com Lots of new features including voice and conference abilities. This is also a very popular IM client.
	ICQ http://icq.com/ One of the first popular instant messengers. It’s not as popular as it once was, but this messenger still has a lot of features.
	Trillian http://www.trillian.cc/ Not a lot of people know about this program, but it is really great. Trillian lets you connect to AIM, MSN, ICQ, Yahoo Messenger and IRC at the same time from the same program.

	Kids
	Habbo Hotel http://habbohotel.com A virtual hangout where you can meet up with friends, make new ones, host a party, and a lot more.
	NeoPets http://www.neopets.com/ A virtual pet site community. Over 70 million pet owners come and interact.

	About The Expert I started using the Internet was new (and to children, I have no doubt that makes me sound really old!). I remember the very first text only chat rooms where there was no emoticons and a ‘smiley’ was simply: :-) Things have evolved quite a bit since then and the online chat experience is now much more feature-rich and advanced.
